Santa Fe Ave (south of downtown LA) The Biggest Bar in the USA 1907-1920 Los Angeles There were no TV’s and very few women, but it was the biggest sports bar in the country. Actors, writers, newspapermen, athletes and businessmen alike flocked to this bar, along with many tourists hoping to get a glimpse of the stars at the “longest bar in the world.” Thirty seven bartenders per shift would sling drinks at a bar that was overseen by the watchful eye of the owner, who had strategically drilled peepholes in his office floor above to oversee the exchange of gold and silver into each register. The final “last call” came on Jan 17th 1920 on the eve of prohibition when more than 60 bartenders served 1,000 customers their last drink. |
